CDC is based on the activation of the complement system and the formation of the membrane attack complex (MAC). In the CDC assay, target cells and antibodies are mixed, and then complement is added. Complement activation leads to the formation of MAC, resulting in the death of target cells. By measuring the survival rate of target cells or the release of molecules that represent cell death, the cytotoxic ability of the antibody can be evaluated. CDC is commonly used in the research and development of antibody drugs, vaccines, and immunotherapies, as well as in the evaluation of the efficacy of these treatments.
